Approximately 30 to 70% of the chronic pain patients relapse after they have successfully rehabilitated. Our task was to develop an intervention for chronic pain patients to prevent relapse after rehabilitation.
In order to bring forth a concept that would truly help them, we regularly spoke with patients and specialists on two locations from the rehabilitation centre Adelante. During their time there, patients learn how to accept the constant pain in their lives. However, that is easier said than done in such a short amount of time. "You have a schedule every week and then at the end of rehabilitation all of that stops. It felt like I fell into a black hole". We found out the patients had a need for rhythm and structure. Besides that they also want their close ones to understand what they are going through.
After the creation of the concept we went back to the rehabilitation centre to test our prototypes every three weeks. We worked with the specialists to find out their thoughts and see if it could co-operate with their methods. It became an application where chronic pain patients could set their life goals in small steps. When a step is accomplished, they can capture the moment in a photo or in gorgeous lettering. Afterwards this little success can be shared with buddies, who are close ones that follow the journey of accepting chronic pain.
